Most Amazing Geological Wonders in the World

Earth is home to magnificent rock formations which can take your breath away. It’s no surprise that tourists flock to these parts to see their unique grandeur and beauty.

Here are some of the most amazing geological wonders in the world:

Eye of Sahara

Eye of Sahara

480 million years ago, 48-kilometer circular geological formations of metamorphic and sedimentary layers were formed through a series of erosion of a volcanic dome in the Western Sahara Desert, in Mauritania, Africa. The Eye of Sahara, also known as Richat structure, looks like an enormous eye of a bull when viewed from space stations.

To reach it, you need to travel across the humid desert of Sahara which is known for its deceptive landmarks and monotonous landscape. While on the journey, look out for oasis where fresh water drips from cliffs.

Australian Wave Rock

Australian Wave Rock

A breathtaking multi-colored granite geological formation which resembles a tall ocean wave is found in Hyden, Australia. Its height is about 49 feet (15 meters). The length is around 360 feet (110 meters).

Local tribesmen believe that it was created by a mythical Rainbow Serpent, which dragged its swollen body across the area after draining the water. This natural rock formation is said to be 2.7 billion years old.

A visit to this area will give you the opportunity to explore Mulka, the prehistoric cave near Wave Rock.

Colca Canyon

Colca Canyon

The world’s second deepest canyon, the Colca Canyon in Peru, is a magnificent geological fault creation between two big volcanoes. Its slopes have traces of pre-Inca terraced crop cultivation. It’s believed to be twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA.

Go to Mirador Cruz del Condor to see the astonishing views, and watch giant Andean condors. It’s also one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world. Rafting in Colca River is another activity to try while in the area.

Giant’s Causeway

Giants Causeway

Lying at the basalt cliffs’ foot along the coast of Antrim plateau in Coleraine City, Ireland- Giants Causeway has inspired many giant tales and legends. The unique horizontal formation of 40,000 black basalt columns never fails to amaze visitors. The rock structures were formed during volcanic eruptions in ancient times.

It became a significant symbol of Northern Ireland, which has attracted tourists for 300 years. Merging with stunning coastline, Giant’s Causeway is one of the finest destinations in the world.

Puerto Princesa Underground River

Puerto Princesa Underground River

Puerto Princesa Underground River is a subterranean river that runs through a cave, which showcases a grand sight of stalagmites and stalactites. It has several big chambers including the Italian’s Chamber, which is considered one of the largest cave rooms in the world. It’s also the habitat of about 400,000 bats.

On December 4, 1999, UNESCO heralded this natural park as World Heritage Site because of its full-mountain-to-the-sea ecosystem and biodiversity conservation habitat. A 45-minute boat tour of the Underground River attractions show tourists why it was chosen as one of New 7 Wonders of Nature on January 28, 2012. It’s located in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines.

Crystal Cave

Crystal Cave

This geologic wonder of Mexico attracts visitors year-round, because of its massive crystal formation. The cave has 40 feet long and 13 feet in diameter Gypsum or selenite crystals. Each beam weighs up to 55 tons. The underlying magma heats the mineral-rich water while the stable 136 degrees Fahrenheit temperature in the cave is responsible for their crystallization.

Exploring the cave requires the supervision of a well-trained and experienced guide.

These places are just few of the most spectacular geological wonders in the world, which will inspire you to travel more and explore nature’s best places on earth.
